The Medical Center with therms were built in 2nd – 3rd centuries. They are considered to have been a part of a larger complex called asclepion. The Pautalia therms are one of the most significant monuments from Roman times in Bulgaria. They are second in size after those in Odessos (present-day Varna). The building has a rectangular layout and a built-up area of 3000 square meters. Six premises situated on an area of 1000 square meters have been researched and exhibited.

Kyustendil hospital is one of firsts Bulgarian civil hospital after the Bulgarian liberation in 1878, which was founded in 1879.
With the introduction of a new administrative division of the country, which made Rousse a regional center, the hospital changed its name to County hospital. In 1970, it became United counted hospital incorporating County hospital and City hospital, as well as all medico-sanitary sections in the city. The administrative and territorial reforms, which followed, brought new changes in the hospital’s status. As an important medical center, and having the necessary equipment and excellent specialists, it receives patients from neighbouring countries as well.

By decision No I - I - 669/01.09.2000 of the Kyustendil district court, the hospital institution is registered as Multi-profile hospital for active healthcare "D-r Nikola Vassilev" – Kyustendil, AD with 51% state and 49 % municipal property. • It is a holder of Permit No MB - 15/11.04.2006, issued by the Minister of Health.
